MTU (Motoren- und Turbinen-Union Friedrichshafen GmbH) ranks among the leading producers of large-scale diesel engines and complete drive systems for boats, heavy land craft and railed vehicles as well as industrial power units.

With respect to marine automation, MTU enables ship masters to control the entire drive line, on-board power supply and the overall vessel. Data measured at any section of the ship are recorded and can be accessed directly from bridge or engine room – visualized on colour screens. In the field, users are thus provided with an up-to-date and quick overview.

Within the scope of the current MCS (Management Control Station) redesign project, the entire UI was rearranged in order to render visible the high quality of the MTU technical solutions also “on the surface”. A special challenge in this context was caused by the widely-spread use of trackballs for controlling systems employed on boat bridges. Especially in the context with possible sea disturbances, splitting the screens into dedicated ranges (in particular marginal and corner areas) was of significant importance (“Fitts’ law“).
